Chief blankets are regal, simple and elegantly designed textiles. The name "Chief blanket" actually originates from the Pueblo and Plains people, who greatly valued these blankets in trade (the Navajo do not have chiefs). The design of these blankets evolved over a period of four phases, beginning in the early 19th century. Broad color bands and relatively few shapes adorn these rugs - in fact, some Chief Blankets contain only broad bands of contrasting colors. These rugs have always been scarce and considered to be very valuable going back even to the time of their production.
